Early November Weekend Day 1

This past Saturday a small group of volunteers took time to put their weekend agendas aside to lend Nature a hand. Northern VA is riddled with gorgeous little streams that pour into the Potomac yet many people don’t take time to appreciate them let alone care for them.

Each tributary has gorgeous sections yet all of them face the unpleasant task of straining the plastic junk that finds its way into storm drains everywhere. Fueled with cider, coffee and a sense of purpose we got busy cleaning Spout Run.

With a busy, congested shopping plaza at its headwaters Spout Run bears the brunt of our throwaway society as the trash cans in the plaza often overflow and everything from cups to purses to plastic bags and even fire hoses get washed downstream. Oh, almost forgot hockey skates:

While it would take many more volunteers and much more time to clean it from plaza to Potomac we made a solid dent in the first few hundred yards pulling out a dozen full bags of trash in just under 2 hours.

Huge thanks to everyone who came out and the HTFU Award of the Day goes to Ryan Bannon who is just 2 weeks off appendix removal!

After filling up on bacon and Punk-Waffles topped with maple syrup and washed down with seriously strong South American coffee …

team mates Jared, Stephanie and Jason headed to Wakefield to burn up some laps and burn off some calories.

A blissful day indeed.

For more words and photos from the 2011 Ed Sanders Memorial Cross Race, check back Monday.
